This desirable 1950s Ferrari has exquisite original Superleggera coachwork by Touring, has been freshly refurbished and is eligible for the most prestigious of tours. Delivered to Charles Moran of New York in the Spring of 1951, its history of racing began at the Le Mans 24 hours which it completed coming in 16th overall and 7th in its class, being one of only two 212 Export Barchettas to run this prestigious event and the only one to finish. A successful racing career followed with impressive results at Watkins Glen, Bridgehampton.

In 1954, the Barchetta was bought by the notable American car collector John Shakespeare, who continued its racing chapter. In the present ownership, the Barchetta has received a cosmetic restoration of its original, unharmed body and chassis with a careful eye on preserving its beautiful lines and originality.

2003 Ferrari Enzo

The 2003 Ferrari Enzo is a legendary hypercar designed to commemorate Ferrari’s Formula 1 successes and honor the company’s founder, Enzo Ferrari. Only 111 examples were allocated for the US market out of a total production run of 400. This specific Enzo boasts a captivating Rosso Corsa DS 322 paint, originally delivered in this iconic color but later repainted black before being professionally restored back to its original hue. Ferrari Classiche has certified its authenticity and heritage. Having been carefully maintained and driven, this Enzo remains in superb condition with only 16,900 miles on the odometer.

A true American automotive icon. Few cars are worthy of such a title but even fewer deserve it more than this early Stutz Bearcat. No car of the era had a more enduring reputation and became so engrained in popular culture as the Stutz Bearcat. This particular Bearcat was part of AK Miller’s famous collection and has only had two owners in the past 80 years. It is highly original and mechanically sorted as well as having won a class award at the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance.

Originally conceived by Harry Clayton Stutz, the Bearcat gained instant success and fame after finishing 11th in the 1911 Indianapolis 500. Its unique design, potent 60hp Wisconsin T-head engine, and precise handling made it a beloved American sports car. Only a few genuine Bearcats survive and this one, from AK Miller’s collection, is considered the most original and sought-after. It underwent thorough recommissioning and restoration, preserving its originality and earning its recognition at prestigious events. Today, genuine early Bearcats are among the rarest, and most sought after, of all the early sports cars.

The 1957 AC Ace Bristol Le Mans Roadster is a highly significant and storied sports car. Originally built as an AC Works demonstrator, it was transformed by Ken Rudd into an AC Bristol factory entry for the 1957 Le Mans 24 Hour race. Rudd extensively modified the car, enhancing its performance and endurance. The car performed impressively at Le Mans, finishing 2nd in class and 10th overall. Afterward, it changed hands multiple times, competing in SCCA races and serving as a daily driver for its long-term owner. In recent years, the car underwent a meticulous restoration to its Le Mans configuration, winning concours awards.

The 1999 Roadster was the second LMP1 developed by Don Panoz and was a groundbreaking Le Mans Prototype that defied conventional racing car design by placing its engine in front of the driver, who sat just ahead of the rear wheels, and next to the Xtrac sequential 6-speed gearbox. Despite this unconventional layout, the car proved to be successful and competitive, coming 11th at the 1999 Le Mans 24 Hours and further competing throughout the 1999 season. The chassis has been carefully stored for over two decades and is now ready for a complete drivetrain, offering a piece of racing history that defied norms and expectations.

1951 Allard J2X

1951 Allard J2X, driven by Steve McQueen

The 1951 Allard J2X is a rare and special car with a fascinating history, being owned for nearly two decades by Steve McQueen from 1962 until his passing in 1980, the car is a true collector’s item. The renowned actor and avid car enthusiast owned and raced many vehicles during his lifetime and the Allard J2X was one of his prized possessions. After his passing, the car was sold at the 1984 Imperial Palace Auction, and since then, has only had two subsequent owners.

The Allard J2X was a sports racing car designed and built by Sydney Allard, a British racer and car builder. The J2X was an updated version of the earlier J2 model, featuring improvements in handling and more cockpit room. It was powered by various American V8 engines, including the Chrysler Hemi, making it competitive in various racing events during the early 1950s. The car remains in its original British Racing Green color after an older restoration, and it is fully documented with provenance and authenticity.

1965 Apollo GT from The Love Bug

The 1965 Apollo GT offered is one of the two original ‘Thorndyke Special’ cars used in the 1968 movie, The Love Bug. Modified and prepared by Hollywood Motors’ Max Balchowsky for the film, the car has undergone extensive research and ground-up restoration in the current ownership. With its unique movie history, the car presents a world of possibilities, from display at tours and shows to enjoying on the road.

This classic American sports car with Italian-inspired design was acquired as a project in 2004 and only afterwards were its movie origins discovered. Remnants of its original yellow paint beneath the primer and evidence of damage determined that the car was one of the two Apollos used in the movie, prepared by Hollywood Motors for the dicing and crashing scenes. Its restoration took around nine years and it debuted at the Concorso Italiano in 2013 where it was introduced to important figures connected to the Apollo marque’s history.

Historic Sportscar Racing

ELKHART LAKE, Wisconsin – A return to VIRginia International Raceway (VIR) for the first time since 2016 and a new endurance race championship for the already popular LMP3 division are among the highlight additions to the 2024 Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) calendar that was announced as part of IMSA’s annual schedule unveiling August 4th at the IMSA SportsCar Weekend at Road America.

The 2024 schedule once again begins and ends at Sebring International Raceway and, along with VIR, includes the equally legendary American racing venues Daytona International Speedway, Watkins Glen International and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

Friday’s announcement was the first time HSR, which was acquired by IMSA in early 2022, was included in IMSA’s annual schedule unveiling at Road America, and next year’s HSR calendar itself includes several additional “firsts.”

Next August at VIR on the IMSA Michelin GT Challenge weekend, HSR will run for the first time as a support series for IMSA’s premier WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The HSR race will showcase select cars from HSR Group 3 (Small-Bore Historic Production cars), Group 5 (Big-Bore Historic Production and GT cars) and Group 7 (Historic Prototype and Sports Racers) representative of sports car endurance racing machines from the previous century. The mix should attract a wide variety of cars such as early Porsche 911 and RS models and Jaguar XKEs to Lola T70s and Ford GT40s.

Another all-new development is the four-race endurance championship for LMP3 cars which have been eligible and a popular choice of competitors in recent years in modern prototype HSR run groups. The championship begins with an LMP3 feature race on the Saturday night of April’s 46th running of the HSR Mitty at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

The Road Atlanta opener will be followed by LMP3 races at HSR’s remaining blockbuster events, the “HSR Classics” at Watkins Glen, Daytona and Sebring. True multi-class endurance races, the LMP3 rounds at all three events will see competitors race in the same run groups they have in recent years, sharing the track with other modern prototype and GT Modern (GTM) divisions while batting for their own class honors and championship points.

The new LMP3 series joins a familiar lineup of returning sprint and endurance race championships that are the high-speed foundation of every HSR race weekend. The lineup includes Sasco Sports International/American Challenge, Stoner Car Care Global GT, the Classic RS Cup, the B.R.M. Endurance Challenge and the WeatherTech Sprint Series, which typically includes a pair of sprint races for all Run Groups on each race weekend.

It all begins for the sixth-straight year with the season-opening HSR Spring Fling at Sebring, March 8 – 10, which will see HSR headline a weekend edition of the event for the first time in several seasons. The Spring Fling sets the stage for the 72nd running of the iconic 12 Hours of Sebring IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race the following weekend.

The Sebring Spring Fling opener is followed by the 46th HSR Mitty at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, April 25 – 28, which is one of the longest-running historic and vintage races in the U.S. and HSR’s first blockbuster race of the season.

The first of HSR’s “triple threat” of HSR Classics races will be the perfect follow up to The Mitty with the second running of the HSR Classic 6 Hour of The Glen, June 6 – 9.

The VIR Michelin GT Challenge weekend support race is next up, August 23 – 25, before the annual return visit to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta for the HSR Fall Historics, September 19 – 22. The perfect complementary event to each April’s HSR Mitty at Michelin Raceway, the Fall Classic has developed an appeal and popularity of its own and is the first of two return visits to tracks on the 2024 HSR calendar.

Set for its milestone 10th running in 2024, the HSR Classic Daytona presented by IMSA, returns to the “World Center of Racing” October 30 – November 3. The HSR Classic Daytona is once again followed next year by the season-ending HSR Classic 12 Hour at Sebring, Pistons and Props, presented by the Alan Jay Automotive Network. The ninth-annual running of the HSR Classic Sebring 12 Hour next year will be held on the legendary Sebring airport circuit, December 4 – 8.

The HSR Classics events at The Glen, Daytona and Sebring share the card each weekend, respectively, with the Watkins Glen Historics, the Daytona Historics and the Sebring Historics races that are all key rounds of the season-long HSR series championships.

Many of the roars from the ‘roaring 1920s’ came from the back of a Bentley 3 Litre. It’s a machine affiliated with flapping skirts, jazz, and daredevil aviation pioneers. Its very name conjures up thoughts of the brash and carefree spirit of the inter-war years. With good reason, too – these cars were exceptionally famous in period and remain so today. They dominated motorsport in their heyday with outright wins at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1924 and again in 1927, among their crowning achievements.

That second win is perhaps the most famous. After the pair of leading works Bentley 4 1/2 Litre cars were wiped out in a big crash, the following 3 Litre referred to as ‘Old Number 7’ got off with lighter, yet still significant, damage. It took the lead and was nursed to the end of the race. Later, battle-scarred and bent Old 7 was rolled into the Savoy Hotel dining room during its own victory dinner. That’s something Bentley would pay homage to at a similar event in 2003, with its new Speed 8 the guest of honour.

I saw and pictured this singular 3 Litre at the Concours of Elegance in 2020. It may not have been a Le Mans winner, but it’s still a special factory model built to celebrate Bentley‘s success at the 1922 Isle of Man Tourist Trophy. It’s also an extremely rare survivor, retaining many of its original bodywork (Vanden Plas), frame and mechanical components. It left WO Bentley’s works in Cricklewood, North London in September 1926 as a Red Label ‘Speed’ chassis. Speed models sit on a cut-down frame with a 9ft 9 1/2-inch wheelbase and are powered by a high-compression engine, driving the rear wheels through a close-ratio A-type transmission.

Registered YR 509 in London, its first owner Eric Loder soon took it touring in the South of France, where it was photographed in Cannes for an article in The Autocar. It was originally finished in silver over maroon, and was repainted in green in the mid-1930s. Having survived the war unscathed, it was bought in the 1950s by well-known Bentley enthusiast Phillip Mann, who used the car to take its current owner to school. The car spent some time in the 1960s and 1970s in the US, and was repatriated in the mid-1980s. The most recent of its two restorations was carried out to an exceptionally high and sympathetic standard by vintage car specialist Thornley Kelham.

Supercars are the ultimate driving luxury and they’re not a new thing in motoring. The first supercar is said to be the Lamborghini Miura, which was released by the Italian manufacturer in 1966 and produced until 1973. 

While supercars have come a long way since the early 1970s, there’s plenty still to love about the classics.  

What’s old is new again which is reflected in fashion coming back into style and the huge vinyl record resurgence. Supercars aren’t exempt from the retrophiles’ gaze, but which in particular are lauded for their older models? 

In this article, we’ll look at popular supercar makes and models which fanatics and collectors consider to be more desirable than their modern counterparts. Is a vintage supercar any more desirable than a modern equivalent like a Range Rover Evoque?

Porsche 911 

In 1963, Porsche unveiled their first editions of the 911, then titled the 901, at the Frankfurt IAA Motor Show.

It hit showrooms a year later in 1964 and over the next 60 years, the 911 would go on to carve out a legacy that would see revisions and resulting in version of the vehicle being identifiable by their generation. 

The sloped design of the car’s body has become one of the most distinctive in all of motoring. This can be seen when you get the chance to look at an original 911 model against one of the more modern editions like the 911 Carrera S. The modern version has a much wider body compared to the more compact vintage 911. 

So, what is the appeal of the original if much of what made them special has been passed down to its successors?  

One thing that you can compare is price. The base price of a modern 911 Carrera S averages more than £100,000, whereas you can shop around and find a vintage 911 first generation model for much less.  

That means you get the timeless look and vintage feel of the supercar at a much more achievable price.  

Ford Mustang 

Nothing exemplifies what it means to be an American muscle more than the Ford Mustang.  

The first generation of the car made its way to showroom floors in the United States in the late 1970s, and helped to define the aesthetic of muscle cars. From the boxy body to the leather interior and crunchy, grinding gearstick, it set the standard for that style of car. 

Modern Mustangs feel more polished when you look at the body. They’re attractive, sure, but it almost feels as if they’re missing a certain edginess that the vintage models have. Modern Mustangs like the GT have a sleeker, more streamlined look that has a similar silhouette to the vintage models but is much less wide. 

Along with the look, the sound is something that you can’t get quite like the original. For all the modern AirPlay capabilities and built-in GPS, turning the key in a vintage Mustang and hearing the engine roar is an irreplaceable experience for lovers of muscle cars. 

Aston Martin DB5 

If there’s one word that is associated with British manufacturer Aston Martin, it’s class. Their legacy in the world of supercars is unbridled luxury and quality, and the DB5 is no exception. The Silver Burch supercar was in production between 1963 to 1965 and was available with a convertible roof option. 

Aston Martin has released many cars since the mid-60s, so why has the DB5 stood out to collectors more than many of their modern models?  

Guy Hamilton’s Goldfinger released in 1964, and James Bond himself drove a DB5 ladened with gadgets landed this car a spot in the hall of fame of cool luxury cars

James Bond is the perfect character to be a brand ambassador for a quality car like the DB5. He’s a character that has withstood the test of time in pop culture, while being reimagined by directors and actors alike.  

One thing that has survived however is the DB5, featuring in various cameos in the recent films like in Spectre (2015) and No Time to Die (2021). 

There’s an old phrase that states: “the classics never go out of style”. This could absolutely apply to supercars, and the appreciation for the way that the vintage models are built, how they look, and the how they sound.
